Jean Walsh
Crocheter, Knitter + Sewer

Jean loves all things crafts but has an affinity for crocheting, knitting and sewing. Originally from Québec, she was born and raised in Verdun, a suburb of the Montréal area. Later in life her husband’s military career enabled them to travel throughout Canada and Europe. Jean recently made the move out west to St. Albert, Alberta so that she and her husband could be close to their growing family. Jean has a passion for working with children. Having worked in schools, daycares and with the Girl Guides of Canada she’s been able to pass on her love of crafting to the younger generations.

FW: Give us a brief background on how you started creating your puppets and why you enjoy it?

Jean: I started creating finger puppets when I saw that there was an opportunity for children to learn through playing with them. Speech therapists and school + music teachers have all used puppets to help children with various aspects of their lives. I wanted to build off of this. They can be used to help sing songs about colour, teach children how to count, and they’re playful additions to story time.

FW: What inspires your work (professional or personal)?

Jean: I’ve always loved to work with children. I found joy in raising and playing with my own three children, followed by my four grandchildren, and now my great grandchild. I’ve worked at a small daycare centre, schools, and am now closing in on 50 years working with the Girl Guides of Canada. Being around their energy inspires me to create items for them to enjoy while also assisting in their development.

FW: How long have you been creating puppets?

Jean: I started creating finger puppets over 32 years ago. Can you believe it!

Back in 2009 I started a passion project that involved crocheting teddy bear finger puppets to gift to children in need. I’ve sent them to schools, doctor’s offices, hospitals, and lab clinics — through my military contacts and friends I’ve also been able to send them worldwide. Even if it’s only one puppet, I wanted to find a way to lift their spirits.

When I set out with this project I wanted to send 5,000 puppets around the world. Fast forward to 2021 and I’m only 180 puppets away from reaching my goal!

FW: Do you have a personal motto or philosophy?

Jean: Whether it be through a smile or holding a door open, try to help someone everyday through a small act of kindness.

FW: Do you have any bits of wisdom for new parents or soon to be parents?

Jean: Enjoy your children now. They will only be that age once.

When they nap allow yourself to take a break, relax, and nap also.
